Why we decided to breed GSDs
When we decided it was
time to move off our trimaran
"Fairhope"
(after 12 years), we took time looking for the German Shepherd Dog that was right
for us. We decided on a CheckMarc x Storm Biscuit pup. Unfortunately, Willie was
born with genetic problems and died at 10 months. Learning about genetic
diseases, good breeding and the unique personality of the GSD were the gifts
that Willie gave us , for which we will be eternally grateful. They became the
impetus for a breeding program to help further the breed. It has been 12 years
since we brought Willie home, 12 years of observing, reading, traveling,
researching and listening.
After Willie died, we looked and picked the
#1 pup of the repeat litter of Ch Covy-Tucker Hills Storm Brier ROM, CD x Karizma's
Timber of Brier Hill, ROM The preceding litters had already developed Champions
and the temperaments, intelligence and health of the preceding litters impressed
us. Learning about movement, we found that Moxie, our pick, had a nice movement,
clean coming and going, but not extreme in her gait. We also discovered that her
structure and lines were of Championship quality. So we became part of the show
crowd, as well as the obedience ring. (Champions of the breeding: Ch Brier Hills
Storm Buster, CD, Ch Brier Hills Storm Buddy, Ch Brier Hills Splitting Image HT, Ch
Brier Hills Versace, Ch Brier Hills Winning Edge and our Ch Brier Hills Mach One
Hopes, CDX)
As one is never enough and as we weren't
knowledgeable enough to begin a breeding program yet, we chose another Stormy x
Timber pup the following year. Sassy developed into a beautiful animal and was placed in a great home in the Imperial Valley, where her competitive
nature and great sense of humor were appreciated.
One of Moxie's
litter sisters was returned to the breeder and I was fortunate enough to buy her
as a present for my son (and me!). Dancer has evolved into a beautiful animal,
far cry from the skinny, deprived pup that we bought.
Our goal is to breed animals that will be
quality in any ring-pets that are loving with stable temperaments, healthy and
as free from genetic problems as possible. Our pups will be raised in the home
and socialized completely before sale. We will not have many litters, but the
litter or so a year will be cared for as pets, not kennel dogs and sold only to
those who have the same concerns and goals as we do. We would love to see our
pups go on to herding, tracking, SAR, obedience, etc. and will encourage buyers
to follow a path that will keep both owner and dog involved in all the pursuits
that a GSD is capable. We will keep in as close contact with new owners as they
will let us in order to develop each puppy to its unlimited maximum.
